On August 31, Morris Werenko was piloting his Cessna C-172 from Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie.  His passengers were Gwendolyn Owen and Michael Gadke.

As the plane approached its destination, the Mr. Werenko reported not being able to land due to fog.  Several residents reported seeing the plane before it went down.

Searchers recovered the body of Gwendolyne Owen on September 4, 1989 from the shores of Goulais Bay.  The bodies of Morris Werenko and Michael Gadke have not yet been recovered.

The Cessna is described as having white wings with red tips.  The fuselage is described as being red in colour with a white stripe and a white underside.  The engine cowling was red. Despite several searches, no wreckage was located.
