Additional Information : | Ron and his wife, Terry Yakimchuk left their home in Edmonton in June 1973. The two were driving to Montreal to attend a friend’s wedding on June 16, 1973. Along the way, Terry and Ron stopped to visit a friend in Brandon, Manitoba. The following day, they arrived in Dryden, Ontario. The last confirmed communication from Terry and Ron was a one-word postcard that was mailed from Dryden. After leaving Dryden, the couple may have decided against continuing along the Trans-Canada Highway as the road ahead was very narrow and hilly. They may have decided to cross into the United States at International Falls, MN and travel on to Duluth, MN. The couple were driving a 1959 red Volkswagen Beetle with a green hood and fender bearing an Alberta license CA3 262. The car was filled with boxes of clothes, books and household goods as well as a white 3-metre kayak. Following their friend’s wedding, Terry and Ron planned to continue on to the Maritimes. Once there, Terry intended to gain employment as a journalist and Ron as a teacher. Ron has been described as laid back and a calming influence on others. He was born in Andrew, Alberta and lived on the family farm. Friends also describe him as a ‘down to earth’ person who was ‘extremely sensible and mature’. Their car, kayak and possessions have never been located. Their bank accounts remained untouched. No trace of the couple has ever been found. The photo below shows Terry and Ron in their 1959 Volkswagon Beetle. The last time they were seen, their kayak was on the roof and not a mattress as shown. |
